The area now known as Mareham Pastures has been transformed by the local community and Lincolnshire County Council into an area for people and wildlife.  It was originally low lying farmland, used by Lincolnshire County Council as a landfill site between 1976 and 1998.

In 2002 Grants were secured from Lincolnshire County Council, WREN and the Big Lottery to pay for the improvements. The Friends of Mareham Pastures was formed in 2003 from members of the local community, to help with the improvements and ongoing care of the area.

In 2004 a new all ability path was constructed and hundreds of trees were planted.  Later in the same year Mareham Pastures was designated a Local Nature Reserve.
