Conservation Volunteer Day

Sleaford Cubs & Scouts plant trees at
Mareham Pastures Local Nature Reserve.

New Woodland Planted!

On Sunday 11th January the fourth of six conservation project days took place at Mareham Pastures Local Nature Reserve.  More than 700 shrubs and trees were planted to replace an area of Leylandii woodland that had to be cut down for safety reasons.

Most of the planting was carried out by Sleaford Cubs and Scouts who are all very involved with the Scouting Association’s Environment & Climate Change work.

Matthew Davey, Lincolnshire County Council’s Environmental and Community Project Officer said:  ‘The Cubs and Scouts really got stuck in and thanks to their hard work; we have achieved a huge amount today. ’

Zoë Watson, Secretary of the Friends of Mareham Pastures added:  ‘The Cubs and Scouts alone must have planted over 500 trees today and it is very encouraging to see so many young people helping to improve their environment in this way.’

The Mareham Pastures Conservation Volunteer Programme continues to provide an opportunity for anyone to get some hands-on experience of conservation work, whatever their previous experience.  The next Conservation Volunteer event will be held on Sunday 8th February when volunteers will be needed to help plant and prune trees.

Volunteers can meet at the Lavender Close entrance, off Hawthorne Drive, Southfields, Sleaford for the 10am start, finishing at around 3pm depending on the weather.  If you can't make a 10am start, but would like to join in, just take a leisurely stroll around Mareham Pastures until you find the Friends Group and the other conservation volunteers.  Then come over and join in.

Each project will be led by Matthew Davey, Lincolnshire County Council’s Environmental and Community Project Officer.  Full training, safety briefing, first aid, insurance cover, tea or coffee and biscuits will be provided.  All we ask is that volunteers wear suitable outdoor clothes and stout shoes and bring a packed lunch.  More information is available on our website:  www.marehampastures.co.uk
