Cubs Meet Tree Planting Challenge

On Saturday 17th February the 1st Cranwell (RAF) Cubs planted 50 trees at Mareham Pastures Local Nature Reserve. The Friends of Mareham Pastures challenged the Cubs to plant 50 trees in an hour at the Local Nature Reserve as part of the Centenary Celebrations of 100 years of the Scouting movement.
Zoë Watson, Secretary of the Friends of Mareham said: ‘The Cubs rose to the challenge and really enjoyed planting the 50 trees.’ Zoë added: ‘The Cubs have been working on their Global Conservation Badge and tree planting was the last project they needed to carryout to earn their badges.’
Matthew Davey, Lincolnshire County Council’s Environmental and Community Project Officer added: ‘It is great to see young people getting involved in conservation activities such as tree planting. The Cubs have been learning about the Countryside Code and Mareham Pastures Local Nature
Reserve; carrying out an activity like this gives what they have learned so much more meaning.’
As well as planting trees the Cubs and their leaders were given a guided tour of the site; Zoë Watson pointed out the different things they had learned about over the past few weeks including hedge laying, nesting boxes, uses of hazel wood and the community woodland areas.
