 Christmas Wood Just Got Bigger!

On Sunday 8th January another 500 trees were planted at Mareham Pastures Local Nature Reserve. These new trees were planted to increase the size of Christmas Wood which was planted on 24th December by children from Belarus, their parents and host families as part of the Chernobyl Children’s Project. The species planted included blackthorn, crab apple, dog rose, hawthorn and hazel; all native fruit producing species which will provide small mammals and birds with a welcome supply of winter food over the years to come.

Sunday’s tree planting event marks the fourth in a series of six conservation project days taking part at the Local Nature Reserve. There will be another tree planting day on Sunday 12th February. Volunteers will again meet at 10am at the Lavender Close entrance and the activity should end around 3pm, weather permitting. If you can't make a 10am start, but would like to join in, take a stroll around Mareham Pastures until you find the Friends Group and the other conservation volunteers.

Matthew Davey, Lincolnshire County Council’s Environmental and Community Project Officer said: ‘the idea of the Mareham Pastures Conservation Volunteer Programme is to encourage local residents to help maintain and improve their Local Nature Reserve.’

The Mareham Pastures Conservation Volunteer Programme aims to provide the opportunity for anyone to get some hands-on experience of conservation work, whatever their previous experience. Each project will be lead by Matthew Davey, Lincolnshire County Council’s Environmental and Community Project Officer. Full training, safety briefing, first aid, insurance cover, tea or coffee and biscuits will be provided. All we ask is that volunteers wear suitable outdoor clothes and stout shoes and bring a packed lunch.
