On Christmas Eve children from Belarus planted an area of
new woodland at Mareham Pastures Local Nature Reserve.
The children and their mothers are staying in Sleaford over
Christmas as part of the Chernobyl Children’s’ Project which
gives children the opportunity to have holiday away from the
effects of radiation following the Chernobyl nuclear
disaster.
Zoë Watson, Secretary of the Friends of Mareham Pastures
said: ‘the children, their mothers and the host families
seem to have really enjoyed planting this area of woodland.
We plan to keep in touch with the children and we will send
them photographs of the woodland as it grows.’
On Christmas Eve over 150 trees were planted and the species
of trees planted included: field maple, crab apple,
hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel and dog rose.

great to see children from Sleaford and the children from
Belarus getting together and having fun planting trees and
enjoying the fresh air at Christmas.’
