Volunteers Learn How to Lay Hedges
|
| Volunteers ready to learn the art of hedge laying. |
Last Sunday the second of six conservation project days
took place at Mareham Pastures Local Nature Reserve.
Matthew Davey, Lincolnshire County Council’s Environmental
and Community Project Officer said: ‘The Conservation
Volunteer Programme is an excellent way for people of
different ages to work together to improve their
environment.’
Zoë Watson, Secretary of the Friends of Mareham Pastures
added: ‘Today has been very successful. These
conservation activities seem to have generated a great deal
of interest and it is very encouraging to see younger
members of the community getting involved.’
Hedge laying is a traditional way of maintaining hedges in
Lincolnshire and has been carried out for hundreds of years.
The process involves cutting the base of the stems and
laying them over. The cut stems are tucked tightly together,
staked and bound with hazel. Eventually a new hedge will
grow and in the meantime the laid stems act as a living
barrier as well as protecting the regrowth.
