Local groups in mammoth tree planting session - Sleaford target
|
|
On Saturday two local groups helped plant 400 more trees
at Mareham Pastures Local Nature Reserve in Sleaford.
The former landfill site, situated between Mareham Lane and
Southfields residential development, is being transformed
into a Local Nature Reserve.
Cubs from both the Kestrels and Kingfishers 3rd Sleaford
Cubs joined the Rotary Club of Sleaford to take part in
another mammoth tree planting event. Matthew Davey,
Lincolnshire County Council Local Nature Reserve Officer,
said: "The Cubs have been really enthusiastic and have
worked really hard today, planting the first 300 of the
trees." Members of the Rotary Club of Sleaford planted
the final 100 trees of the day as part of a number of events
to celebrate the centenary of the Rotary Club.
The Rotary Club of Sleaford also sponsored the barn owl
boxes that were erected at Mareham Pastures Local Nature
Reserve last year. Zoë Watson, secretary of the Friends of
Mareham Pastures, said: "It is wonderful to see different
groups from Sleaford getting involved in this project. It is
really exciting as the site is now really starting to take
shape."
Management of the site is overseen by
Lincolnshire County Council, who in conjunction with the
Friends of Mareham Pastures continues to improve the site.
The Friends of Mareham Pastures group, established in 2003,
was created by members of the local community. The group
meets every six weeks to discuss and plan the development of
the site
